     GRIP SPORTS:

STEVE GARDENER (www.stevegardener.com)
Planet Hercules: Grip Sports

Event Discription:

There are three grips used, as noted below. Lifts can be done to the front or straddle style. With any form or style balance is an issue. All of the lifts below used a straight free revolving bar.

Note: Cambered stiff bars allow for much higher numbers.

1. Hook Grip:

Frank Ciavattone 255.1-kilos right handed.
Mark Felix's 225kilo left hand (recent effort).

2. Thumb Over Grip:

UK record: Steve Gardener 150-kilos
WR: Frank Ciavattone 151.3-kilos

3. Thumbless Grip

UK record: 116.2-kilos David Horne and Steve Gardener

All Information courtesy of Steve Gardener.

4. One Handed Lifts:

One hand 1" vertical bar lift AKA 'the sword in the stone lift due to it looking like King Athur pulling Exalibur free.

Using a 1" (LGC) bar. Hook grip (no longer used in competition) Jim Wylie has pulled a WR 243kilos.

Using a non-rotating pulley style hand, chain and adapated bar the athlete pulls as heavy a load as he can 2" off the floor. The chain length can be adjusted to suit and the lifting hand locked against the thigh. The free hand can be used to brace and push off of a thigh.

330-kilos Steve Gardener (also holds the total record at 630kg)

5. Thumb Over Grip:

All round competition UK (and I think WR) 172.9kilos Jim Wylie

Planet Hercules

Single lift event UK (and I think WR) 173.5kilos Steve Gardener

6. Rolling Thunder:

A well known tool made by Ironmind. The handle, which must freely rotate, spins and thus makes it some kind of test.

Older handle: Mark Felix has pulled 301lbs and Chad Woodall has equalled this.

Planet Hercules

Newer handle: Mark Felix has pulled 271lbs
Steve Gardener has an unofficial pull of 275lbs.

7. Dinnie Ring Lift:

Mimicking a one hand lift, for reps, of the heavier Dinnie Stone at about 187-kilos.

David Horne has pulled 20 reps with his left hand and Steve Gardener 22 reps (just beating Jim Wylie's 21 reps done minutes earlier). Steve has, therefore, done the most with either hand.

Apollons Axle / 2" Thick Bar Double Overhand Deadlift (Conv or Sumo) Using Agreed Standardized Rules:

  • UK: Laine Snook/Steve Gardener have both pulled 440 lbs. in UK competition.

  • US: Andrew Durniat 455 lbs.
  • WR: Janne Virtanen (Finland) 474 lbs.
